Card experts from the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC17/WG1 have been hard at work developing the next edition of ISO/IEC 10373 Part 1. This standard includes the test methods for General Characteristics of cards and is followed when determining compliance to ISO/IEC 7810 and other application specific standards. The document is currently undergoing its 3rd Committee Draft (CD) review by participating countries over the next seven weeks. Once all participating countries agree on a CD, the document will become a final draft, before it becomes the 3rd edition of the international standard. At the time of writing this article, the 3rd edition is expected to be published towards the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020 and include the following changes
  • Three new Electro-Static Discharge test methods intended for cards with Dual Interface or made out of conductive materials.
  • A test method for pressure stress caused by contact pins on readers.
  • A test method for determining the Peel Strength at the Edge of the card.
  • Removal of the Static Magnetic Field test method.
  • Both Amendments 1 and 2 of the current 2nd edition to be included.
  • Numerous other changes to text, figures and tables to provide an easier to understand and more concise standard.
In addition to these changes, CTI is proud to now have an official ISO/IEC editor as its Chief Technology Officer. Steve DeDera (CTI's CTO) has recently been selected as the official editor for ISO/IEC 10373-1 by the International Standards Organisation. We are delighted to support Steve with this key role within the working group. The selection is a testament to the in depth knowledge and accuracy of CTI's testing and reporting in this highly specialised industry. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the years of service given by the previous editor of this standard.

If you have further questions about the proposed changes from the 2nd edition, please contact Steve via our contact page.
